DIY Fresh Christmas Wreath

I love having some fresh greenery around at Christmas time, especially now that we no longer get a real tree. This DIY wreath using real greenery smells amazing and adds the perfect festive touch to your Christmas porch and could even be used inside.

Just so you don’t think I’ve gone too crazy with Christmas decorating already, this wreath is actually from our Christmas porch last year – I just didn’t have a chance to share the tutorial with you.  The wreath held up amazingly well and actually stayed up until the end of February {minus the Christmas sign!}.

Fresh Christmas Wreath Tutorial

Making a fresh Christmas wreath is probably a lot easier than you think!  With some basic supplies and a little time, you can customize your wreath to your own particular style and enjoy that scent of fresh cut greenery all season long.

Materials

• Metal Wreath Form.  These can be purchased at pretty much any craft store in various sizes. Remember that the greenery will add quite a bit of extra size to your wreath.  Most wreaths use a 12-18 inch wreath form.
• Green Floral Wire and Wire Cutters
• Moss
• Fresh Greenery cut into 6-12 inch sections. Using a mixture of greenery such as pine, cedar, boxwood, spruce, juniper, fir adds extra texture and depth to your wreath.  If you’re lucky enough to have your own trees, just cut off some branches and get to work.  If you need to purchase it, look at your local garden centres, supermarkets, or Christmas tree farms.
• Add-ons.  The fun part is always decorating your wreath!  You can add ribbon, pine cones, twinkle lights, twigs, berries, flocking, or anything else that you desire.

To Do

• Stuff the wreath form with moss and secure using the floral wire every couple of inches.  You want the moss to be fairly compact.  {NOTE: You can choose to do this without using the moss and just securing the branches directly to the wreath form with the wire; however, this method makes it much easier to go back and adjust the branches to get your desired look.  I also think it finishes it off nicer.}

• Continue all the way around the wreath until it’s completely filled with the moss.

Starting at the top of the wreath in the center, add your greenery by sliding the branches under the floral wire. You can add greenery from the front of the wreath as well as the sides to completely fill in the gaps.  Use the larger branches first and then fill in any blank spaces with the smaller branches.  Alternate your greenery as you go so you get a nice mix of the different textures.

• Once you’ve completed half of the wreath, start back at the top and complete the other half.

• Add any embellishments that you would like.  I dressed mine up with some large pinecones, some twigs, and some faux brances of snow covered mini pinecones.  Have fun with it!

• When it came to decorating our Christmas porch, I decided that I wanted that winter wonderland snowy look to my wreath so I added some flocking as well.  It only takes an extra couple of minutes but totally transforms the look of your wreath.  Learn how to flock a tree and other greenery HERE.

• Lastly, I added some twinkle lights because I LOVE that pretty glow!  I used battery operated lights that worked on a timer so they would come on {and go off!} every night without having to worry about it.  Be sure to use outdoor lights if they will be in a setting where they may get damp.
